Revisiting - III
Clearly define what abundance means to you, both qualitatively and quantitatively. I define abundance as "having enough". What is "enough" for me may not be "enough" for you or vice versa.
Let me tell you the story of one of my school teachers. In India, the school teachers were paid poorly in our times. The teacher was excellent in his profession. My teacher lived in a ramshackle house with his wife and their three children. His house was barely furnished to the extent that there was only one wooden chair and one tin chair. There was one bed. He did not have a bicycle and walked to the school. I had heard that towards the end of the month, the family could barely manage food two times a day. My teacher displayed a very calm and contented demeanor. He appeared to be at peace. He smiled quite often. I have never heard him complaining. When a student or his parent visited the teacher's house, the visitor was always welcomed with an open heart. The visitor was always offered food from their meagre store. I have never heard him complaining that he did not have enough. The teacher and his family lived in happiness and harmony and these overflowed to the visitor. My teacher lived in abundance. His interpretation of abundance was different.
It is a fundamental requirement that you clearly define what abundance means to you. Without such a clarity you are bereft of a destination to reach. And when there is no goal, any road can take you there.
Setting a goal for abundance is a subject which requires. We will discuss this a bit later.
Striving for wealth is not greed provided it is accompanied by ethical living and service and for the purpose of leaving a legacy. Yes, if one is striving for wealth alone, then one is striving for limited abundance only and such abundance , if at all realised, is realised in a limited way and not accompanied by health, joy and happiness. To repeat, complete and whole abundance means abundance in wealth, relationships and service, heath and spirituality. We must strive for this completeness. Seeking abundance must give meaning to our lives.
You must realise that you are always in the the "Now". You can not live in the past nor can you live in the future without isolating ourselves from reality. "Now" is all that is ans "Now" is all that counts. You can not afford the "Now" to slip through your fingers. Every "Now" must be made to add value to your life. If you let the "Now" pass you by, you are incurring an irreplaceable loss. You need to embrace the "Now", howsoever difficult the "Now" may be. You have one task and that is to do your best in every "Now" howsoever mundane your engagement in the "Now" may be. To build a habit of doiing your best is a habit that ill be required for reaching abundance. We can not wait for better times and better engagements in the future to do our best. Excelling in the current reality opens up doors for better engagements and better days. More opportunities come up and more avenues open up. Excel now to attract abundance.
In my initial days in the steel plant, I was looking after operations, My job was very routine. My daily schedule was to put in eight hours of work, doing some routine monitoring, and then going home to my family. It was all very mundane and drab. I had one predominant desire in those days and that was to become so proficient in all aspects of my profession which would place me among the few who were referred by others, to solve their problems.
I decided to take action. I became very involved in my work. I started reading technical journals and started trying out new things in my work. My work hours no longer mattered. I started looking forward to go to work. My work turned to sheer joy. I developed a few path breaking methodologies. I gradually reached a level of proficiency which I had desired. I continued to build on that till this day. What happened in the process was magical. I reached the top level of my organisation in a much shorter time. My earnings went up be leaps and bounds. I received numerous lecture assignments which improved my standing further. I set up a process by which I could finance education of few underprivileged children every year and complete their education up to professional level. This was fulfillment of another of my desires. The fulfillment of one desire is rippling over to other desires. I had learnt the value of "Now". The resulting contentment is indescribable.
