Back to the roots - XII

The Solar Plexus or Manipura chakra

The third chakra known as Solar Plexus chakra or Manipura chakra in Sanskrit,  is located two finger breadths above the navel. It opens towards the front. It has a counterpart which opens towards the back.

Its colour is yellow.

It is associated with the element Fire.

It is associated with lower back, abdomen, digestive system, stomach, liver, spleen, gall bladder, autonomic nervous system.

It's associated gland is pancreas which plays an important role in digestion of food. Pancreas secretes insulin which regulates blood sugar.

It is our power centre which absorbs the solar energy and vitalises our physical body. We radiate our emotional energy from this chakra. Our interpersonal relationships, our likes and dislikes are mostly controlled by this chakra.

It is a chakra which transforms the desires and wishes of the lower chakras into higher form and manifests the spiritual energy of higher chakras into the physical world.

Our mood depends on the functioning of this chakra.  When we feel happy, full of joy and optimistic, the third chakra is open. We feel depressed and pessimistic, the third chakra is blocked.

Through this chakra we perceive others' vibrations. On sensing negative vibrations, this chakra contracts.

A harmonious Manipura chakra creates inner peace and harmony.  You allow the character traits of others. You accept yourself the way you are.

A malfunctioning third chakra makes you manipulative. You want the manipulate everything in accordance with your wishes and control everything. You have a feeling of discontent and restlessness. You find it difficult to let go and relax. You get upset and agitated easily. The root cause lies in experiences of lack of acceptance in growing years of childhood and preteen years.

A weak third chakra will make you dejected and discouraged easily. You tend to focus on obstacles. You look for external approval and acceptance. When faced with a difficult situation you will tend to be uncertain and nervous leading you to disorganized actions. Out of the way experiences scare you.

Do not let go of any opportunity to look at fields of ripe wheat bathed in sunlight.

Gemstones like Tiger's Eye, Amber, Topaz and Citrine help in cleaning and stabilising Manipura chakra.

Fragrances of Lavender, Rosemary and Bergamot will also help.

If you want to balance Manipura, sit in any of the meditation postures discussed in earlier posts on Meditation and Breathing. Visuaise a golden yellow ball of light resting in your Manipura chakra. See it growing bigger and brighter and finally covering he upper abdomen. Hold. The complete meditation should take no more than 10 minutes. You can practise longer if you so wish.

I prefer to do this meditation once a week.

You can also put on you earphone, and listen to the music piece below while doing this meditation.
