Breathing - IV
Om Kriya
The sound of "Om" has a personal meaning to me. As the roar of sea waves means the presence of a sea nearby, whether I am able to see it or not, the sound of Om tells me the presence of the Divine, whether I am able to see it or not.
Om is widely used in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. I do not relate Om to any religion. I am focused on the sound and feel of Om.
Om is pronounced like "home" without the "h".
Listen to the pronounciation.
For our exercise, the emphasis will be on "m". We will pronounce it as follows:

"ooooooommmmmmmmmmmmm"
Out of the time required to utter Om, 35% will be dedicated to "o" and 65% on "m".
Adopt one of the "Dhyana" postures. There are quite a few. I prefer the posture where you sit in a lotus or semi lotus position with both my hands on the knee, palms facing up, forefinger and thumb joined to form a circle and other three fingers extended
fully. Again it depends on your comfort with a posture. You must be able to hold it comfortably for the duration of the exercise. A straight back chair will also be fine. The requirement is to hold the spine straight with the spine, neck and head in one line.
Inhale deeply through your nose using your belly. Exhale through your nose pumping out the breath slowly. Repeat 4 to 5 times till you feel calm and collected.
Inhale deeply through you nose. With exhalation say "oooommmmmmmm". Cease uttering when you have exhaled completely. Follow a 4-4 cycle to start with and move to 4-8 or higher. Do not stress yourself. The cycle time should be as per your comfort level. It will increase as you go on practising.
Do it 10 times per sitting to start with. Increase as you advance. Do it at least once a day in empty stomach.
Focus on "Om". As you utter the "mmmmm" segment of it, you will sense vibrations inside your chest and head. As you practise, you will experience vibrations all over your body including tips of your fingers. To feel the vibrations better, keep your ears closed with balls of cotton or earplug.
Practise uttering "Om" from the depth of your navel. Take the source of sound deep inside you. You will experience a bass tonal quality.
It is a high power exercise which will connect you to the divine.
I have discussed three exercises. Practise as many as you want.
Listen to the MP3 below and feel the peace accompanying the sound of Om
