The Law
We tend to fritter away the tremendous power of thought energy by not exercising our will to concentrate and direct it. We indulge in shooting out packets of thoughts of ill will, jealousy, sneers and judgements very often. Such thoughts, as mentioned earlier, draw similar thoughts to us and hurt us.
There is another mental game that we play on a regular basis - the game of "impossible" thinking. We brand certain things as impossible as we shy away from the effort required to achieve that. When we say that something is impossible, we literally close the door to that in our mind. We forget that all that we see about ourselves were thought to be impossible by most of our predecessors.
Each one of us is destined to create and live in abundance. Each one of us is here to create heavenly experiences on earth. There is no point in choosing to continue to stay in poverty and not come out of it. It is like trying to nurture a plant without water. Such a plant will remain weak and wither away. It is true that a few spirits have overcome the pressures created by poverty and risen to great heights in spite of staying in poverty. At the some time there are many a great spirits who could not blossom to their potential due to the shackles of poverty. "I am not able to afford" is a though which continuously plays at the back of the mind. This, together with jealousy of seeing abundance of others, has driven many a soul to unethical path of cheating, swindling and thieving. As discussed earlier, ill gained abundance has a short life. It damages. I exhort that seek abundance the right way. It will open up windows not experienced earlier. Abundance brings in creative people in our environment, brings in new ideas and causes us to be creative. A situation where I can not cultivate great minds is not acceptable. The power to come out of such a situation lies within us.
Let us look at another paradigm which does not help anyone. Providing a service free of cost appears to be an act of giving but it is seldom perceived favorably by the one who received such a service. Paying, in some way or the other, for service received gives dignity to the person who receives such a service. If I am not able to recompense for the services received, I am living on charity. Will that help in holding my head high and meeting the eyes of other persons when I talk to them? Or will it lead me to be diffident and to grovel? A person who has made a practice of living on charity will continue to do so. Such a person loses the urge to make the effort necessary to stand on his feet. I, as the person, who provides such charity, am unconsciously creating persons with low dignity. I, as the person, who provides such charity, am probably frittering away my abundance and heading towards becoming a person who will need charity.
So do we consider that charity is bad? Charity done indiscriminately is indeed bad, both for one who does and one who receives. We do not have the right to create a class of people who live full time on charity and who demand charity as their right. Charity may become necessary after major upheavals like natural calamity, accidents, wars, famine etc. But it has to be for a minimal period and should not be allowed to continue indefinitely. In normal course, every service should be paid for, in some form or the other. The best kind of charity done is to empower someone to become independent, to enable one to stand on his own feet rather than perpetuating the habit of living on charity. It is so important to get off the shackles of obligations in treading the path of abundance. Living with obligation is a psychic drag. Pay back and become free.
