Calm Mind - I

When we discussed "Allowing" in the posts on the Law of Attraction and its associated laws, we had concluded that we shall allow divergence without permitting the divergence to affect us. "I am what I am and am joyous in that, you are what you are and are joyous in that. Your choices can not affect me without my consent." Such a way of thinking requires disciplining the mind to attain calmness and resolve in the mind. Meditation is a very useful way of achieving this end.

We normally tend to link meditation with Saints, highly developed spiritual beings, yogis. We tend to link this term with renunciation, frugal living, giving up all attachments etc. Yes, there are levels of meditation which link us to Higher Realms. These levels are very tough to attain and very few are able to reach these levels.

When we are discussing Meditation, we have a limited agenda - to calm our mind.

Our mind is like a lake. When the lake is calm, we can see a clear reflection of the moon. At the same time one can peer deep into the lake. When the lake is turbulent, all reflections are broken. As ripples are formed in a lake due to a falling leaf, surfacing of marine life or caress of breeze, so is mind made turbulent by incessant stream of thoughts - 60,000 of them in a day. Some of these thoughts come up from our deep subconscious like the marine life floating up, others are attracted by us from outside.

Executing any task requires concentration - specially a task related to learning a new skill. Concentration intensifies thought.   Concentration comes from a calm mind.

A favourable environment helps in meditating. A room or a part of a room can be dedicated for meditating. This space can be made pleasant by burning incense, hanging pleasant pictures. Debar anyone, including self, to use profanity in this space. The idea is to create a space of peace, love and serenity. Our temples, churches, mosques, gurudwaras serve specifically this purpose. The moment we enter such a space, our minds register a state of peace and love automatically.

Meditating close to nature is also fine. I suggest this after making some progress.

A straight back posture is essential whether sitting on ground, mat or in a straight backed chair. The posture should be comfortable which can be held, without fidgeting, during meditation.

We will coninue with most basic details in the next post.

I will keep things simple and adaptable for all.

Namaste. See you soon. Have a beautiful day.
